What is an ATA? Analog Telephone Adapter

We will be selling these online shortly

ATA or ( Analogue Telephone Adaptor ) is a box which acts as a hardware interface between a analog phone system and a digital network or VoIP service. Using an ATA, you can merge your PSTN phone system and VoIP service, or connect a to your phone network. It acts as a kind of a bridge between traditional telephone technology and VoIP technology. An ATA allow you to connect into the VoIP network with your standard phone. It a small plastic box like an external modem. The analog phone adapter will have several cable ports. Generally theres an ethernet port for connecting to your broadband network's router & a couple of standard phone sockets (know as foreign exchange system ports FXS). Top of the line models will also include a PTSN call pass through and fax port.

What is VoIP?  This is VoIP Basics 101 - VoIP is the ability to make phone calls via your internet connection instead of going through or paying your regular phone company. VoIP stands for "Voice over Internet Protocol" & "internet phone". Internet Phone; Internet Telephone; Voip - all mean the same thing - making cheap calls over the internet to anywhere. The calls can even be FREE.  VoIP might be referred to as:- Voice over Broadband Internet telephony IP Telephony Broadband Phone Broadband telephony. But it all means the same thing VoIP = cheap phone calls. So next time someone asks "What is VoIP?" .... you can tell them cheap (or free) phone calls.

A free voip service provider will restrict you to your pc. In order to make calls you a PC. You  need  headphones and microphone and to initiate a call you will need to use the mouse and keyboard. When someone calls you, answer your phone. Your computer must be switched on and connected to the internet to make and receive calls. Also, and this is important, the person calling you or the person you are calling will need to be with the same provider in order for the calls to be free. Otherwise fees will occur and it might be worth looking at a paid voice over internet protocol provider.

A paid voip provider will generally charge a monthly fee and an amount per call. This kind of installation can be a little more complicated but give you superior VoIP service and sound. The whole process of making and taking calls is great. All you need do is dial an access number before using your phone. Often the paid VoIP Provider's service will inter-operate seamlessly with your existing land line account and automatically fall back on this service if anything goes wrong with your VoIP connection. Calls are cheaper than using your phone company and calls between customers using the same provider are currently free in most cases. This provides a big motivation for signing up for a paid service. Another benefit to using a paid voip service provider is that the role of the computer is minimal. Your computer can even be switched off and it will have no impact on your ability to receive or make calls. The downside is if you are away when sopme one rings and making emergency calls.

VoIP So how does voip work?
Your ordinary phone which is analog uses circuit switching to transport calls. This means that a large two-way connection is opened between phones for the entire duration of the phone call. During the conversation thousands of miles of switching equipment and copper have to be maintained. This causes a very long chain of devices between the two parties. And can result in many problems - low voltage, poor electrical connections, older equipment, bad weather... Where as VoIP uses packet switching. Which basically means that instead of an open line it only sends information when there is something to send. It breaks the voice into tiny portions - each packet being a separate item. Each package is sent via a one way connection in the correct order and addressed to the same recipient. The packages pass through the internet routing system and servers in all directions. Each package will be given the least congested route to travel. The end result of all this is clearer, less echo and more efficient calls. It also means that your computer can be surfing the net, downloading files, receiving email and receive a call at the same time.
Many have now extended VoIP calls to your cell phone. This move coincides with wireless broadband networks the providers have built, which transmit the data bits fast enough and accurate enough to make a VoIP Cell Phone a reality.
VoIP can definitely be a cheap and easy way to bundle all of you communications together. As technologies continue to move forward and VOIP services continue to improve, providers will continue to offer more affordable and more reliable services.
Cell Phone providers offering VoIP cell phone services generally will charge you a per-minute fee on top of a monthly fee. If you don't use your cell phone very much then it may not be cost effective to change to VoIP however if you make lots of calls and or make regular international calls on your cell phone then it is probably very worth your while and will save you heaps.

Do I need an Analog Telephone Adapter?
You will need an ATA if you want to use your current analog phone and connect to a phone-based voip provider. An ATA normally has two sets of outlets: one for your VoIP service or LAN and another one for your conventional phone. Obviously, on one side, you can connect and RJ-45 jack (VoIP or Ethernet cable) and on the other, a RJ-11 (phone line cable) jack.
An ATA links with the remote VoIP Service Provider’s service using a VoIPProtocol such as >SIP or H.323. The encoding and decoding of voice signals are done using a voice . ATAs communicate directly with the VoIP service, therefore there is no need for software, and hence no need for a computer, although you can connect one to a computer or a softphone.

Which ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) is best for me? 1-Port Box?
This box will work if you have an existing router attached to your DSL or cable modem. Check to see if there is an extra Ethernet port available on your DSL or cable modem, wireless router, or network router. If you do, this 1-port gateway is for you! (Some popular routers are Cisco, Linksys, and Netgear).

2-Port Box? On the contrary, if you don't have an available Ethernet port on your DSL or cable modem or you don't have any type of additional router on your network, you probably need to use the 2-port box. It has a router built in.

"My Ultimate ATA"
1) Support for the G.729a codec simultaneously on BOTH ports.
Many ATAs only support this compression codec on one port
2) Not locked down or password protected.
Many ITSPs, such as Vonage, lock/password-protect their devices. So if you want to switch VoIP service providers, you are left hanging owning a worthless brick!
3) PSTN Failover in the event of power failure or Internet outage
This is only important if you have a secondary PSTN port to plug into the ATA. Useful in DSL deployments which often keep the analog PSTN line.
4) Dial over the PSTN (if available) intead of VoIP if you dial 911
This negates the need for E911, but again, it assumes you haven't killed your land-line.
5) Web-browser administrative interface for accessing advanced ATA functions and features
6) Supports fax machines
Many ATAs have difficulty with fax machines
7) Handles touch-tone digits
Some ATAs have difficulty handing touch-tones due to compression
8) ATA works well with TiVo using VoIP call
Often times if you connect a TiVo to an ATA's analog port for updating the TV guide listings, it fails. There are many frustrated TiVo users out there that killed their landline and have tried to use a VoIP call to perform the updates. This has to do with the fax modem built into the TiVo and the compression that goes on inside the ATA which affects the fax signals.
9) Supports STUN and other NAT traversal methods.
10) Can setup call forwarding from the web interface to forward calls to a specified number (i.e. cell phone)
11) Can setup advanced call routing and call forwarding rules
For example, the ability to define schedules for when calls are forwarded to which number. Another example: You can specify that it calls multiple pre-specified numbers "round-robin style" until someone answers and enters in a PIN to accept the forwarded call.
12) SIP Support (obviously)
13) Supports registering onto multiple SIP registrars.
This way you can for example, register on Vonage's server (for PSTN outbound calling) and also register on FWD (SIP-to-SIP user calls). Then you can initiate calls to either the PSTN or SIP users in a SIP database.
14) 2nd Dialtone - dial your home phone, it recognizes your CallerID as "allowed" and grants you 2nd dialtone to initiate an outbound call from a remote location. Alternatively, instead of CallerID, maybe you can press #, enter in a PIN and get 2nd dialtone.

Since many offer "unlimited flat rate plans", essentially your home ATA becomes a VoIP gateway. Just don't tell your friends/family about this 2nd dialtone feature. As tempting as it is to "share" your "virtually free VoIP line", if you let them call through your ATA, that's considered "reselling" - which is explicitly prohibited in every VoIP ISTP contract I have ever seen. Don't do it!!!
